*Spoilers for Justice League Action Season 1, Episode 37 “The Ringer” in the review and recap below.
The episode opens with Hal Jordan struggling in a space battle with Sinestro. Green Lantern’s ring is almost drained of energy, but Sinestro seems more powerful than ever, despite using his ring continuously.
Wonder Woman, The Atom, and Superman travel to meet up with Green Lantern. Wonder Woman has the idea for her and Superman to distract Sinestro, while Atom helps Green Lantern re-charge. Superman is able to get some good hits in while Wonder Woman attacks from the ship.
While Hal re-charges his ring, he notes that Sinestro’s ring is more powerful than ever. The Atom decides he can figure out what is making Sinestro’s ring so powerful if he can get close enough to the ring, which Hal gives him a boost in doing.
Atom enters the ring and appears to enter a dream state. The Atom struggles with fear and is embarrassed, in the dream state, in front of the Justice League with cameos by Zatanna, Vixen, and more. Atom struggles with fear, including being chased by a dog while miniaturized.
Once he is able to calm down, he discovers a miniature lantern battery that is powering Sinestro’s ring. The ring is defended by Despotellis, a giant spider-looking creature who is one of the more powerful members of the Yellow Lantern Corps.
The rest of the league continues to struggle with Sinestro’s extra powerful ring. Eventually, the Atom is able to defeat Despotellis by shrinking down to a subatomic level and changing the villain’s chemical structure. Hal is then able to stop Sinestro by running him over with a simple train construct.
This isn’t the most memorable episode of Justice League Action, but it certainly not without it’s charms. While the Green Lantern and Yellow Lantern fight seems like the main story of the episode, the Ray Palmer Atom is the real star.
We follow the Atom’s journey throughout “The Ringer”. Seeing his journey to Sinestro’s fear ring was the best part of the episode. While getting laughed at by the Justice League wasn’t the strongest part, it was fun to see the miniature Atom being chased by a normal sized dog.
The Lantern constructs were also a strong point of the episode. The show takes advantage of the animated format to come up with some creative constructs in battle. And who doesn’t want to see Sinestro battle with a steaming train?
While “The Ringer” isn’t the strongest episode of the series, the unique uses of Atom and Lantern space battles make it a fun outing.
